Eye Examinations

An eye examination involves a sequence of tests to evaluate your vision and assess for eye diseases. We may use a variety of instruments, shine bright lights directly at your eyes and request that you look through an assortment of lenses. Each test during an eye examination evaluates a different aspect of your vision or eye health. The most common vision problems are refractive errors, more commonly known as near-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia (blurred reading caused by age-related changes of the lens in the eye). Refractive errors occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina. These refractive errors can be corrected with spectacles and contact lenses.

Eye health assessment is an important aspect of your eye examination. There are various systemic conditions of the body that can result in changes in the structures within the eyes (for example high blood pressure, diabetes and neurological diseases).

Medication (for example acne medication, ADHD medication and cortisone-based medicine) and pregnancy can also affect your vision. Expecting moms are susceptible to fluctuations in vision due to the increase in hormones in the body with pregnancy.

Eye examinations are recommended every 12 to 18 months for spectacle wearers and every 6 to 12 months for contact lens wearers. Regular eye examinations give your optometrist a chance to help you correct or adapt to vision changes and provide you with helpful tips on caring for your eyes.

Not only do we want you to see well, we also want you to look and feel good. Our Eyecare Team is well trained to assist you in selecting spectacle frames that will complement your face and fit your personality.
